Become An Expert in PowerBi From Scratch

Course Syllabus

Power BI is a Data Visualization and Business Intelligence tool nowadays. We will learn why it is so effective tool in the market. How to install it and then will go through with its different components and how it works. Also we will see a comparison between the two visualisation tool- power Bi and Tableau.

Power Bi is all about visualization, telling story through dashboards. To get that a proper knowledge of charts matter a lot. In this session we will learn about the different charts in Power BI.

Power BI provides two types of map visualization – bubble maps and shape maps. To create a Map you need some geographical Data type such as Country , State, City , Postal code , Latitude, longitude etc. Map Formatting options are available under Map controls to enhance the Map.

We will be using Table under Visualizations, will learn about table formatting, conditional formatting. The default aggregation is sum, which can be changed to Avg, Count, etc.

Cards are the indicator which gives some value could be Number, Text Date .

There are different types of filters in Power BI: Filters on this Visual ,Filters on this page Filters on all pages, Drill Dow. We go through each one of them in detail.

Slicers are the interactive filters . It can be Text Slicers, Date Slicers, Numeric Slicers.

In Power Bi you can import advance charts as add-ins developed by other developers. Once logged in to Power Bi you will be taken to App Store and from there we can proceed with the downloading.

We can insert Picture , Shape , Text Box , Button ,Action URL, Navigation, Bookmark, Drill-through in power BI visualization.

Bookmark Action is a collection of Book Mark, Buttons, Selection page & Action. We see this is details.

A Report is a combination of multiple Visuals on a single page, along with features to interact with the end-user.

Power BI Service is a sharing tool to share the visualization with other users. You need to create a Power BI Service account and publish your creation on it. It has features like comment, share, subscribe.

In Power Bi dashboard can be created only in Power BI Service. To ad a visual you just need to pin the Visual to the dashboard. PowerBi Dashboard are not interactive by default. To make the dashboard interactive you need to pin the live page. These are actually useful if you want to see the static view.

You can automate the refresh by scheduling a refresh. There is a proper procedure behind this, will look into this in detail.

POWER QUERY: An ELT TOOL
Power Query is a ETL tool (Extract Transform Load) which provide many function (Text Functions / Date Functions/ Number Functions) Merge, Split ,Change Case ,Extract (left, right, substring, Delimiter). The best part of Power Query is you do not have to write any formula.

In Power Query you can use around 32 calculations without writing any formula just simple button clicks. Add, Subtract, Multiply Divide, Percentage, Percentage of, Round, Sign, Is Even, Is Odd

Multiple sheets in Excel can be appended as a single sheets in Power BI.
Merging Sheets in Power Query can be considered as advanced lookup.

CFE is Just like Fast Fill In Excel. Many of the Text & date functions can be utilized without writing any function, Just by few clicks. (Split, Merge, Date Parts, Part of AlphaNumeric Data).
Conditional Column is just like IF Else formula in Excel without writing any code.

Data Modelling is used to connect multiple data sources using relationship and allows us to create visuals based on multiple data sources. To create a data model we need to switch to Model view. We see this in detail.

To connect to SQL we just need to specify the server name and click on OK. Will look into the setps

Projects Covered

XYZ school is providing education in many domains such as Arts, Engineering & Science and has
students from different countries. You have been assigned the task to use some visualisation
techniques to analyse the performance of the school. Three reports needs to be created:

1) Student Report – Highlighting the individual performance of the student
2) Faculty Report – To monitor the performance and rating of the faculty
3) Management Report – To analyst the factors influencing the profit and loss.

This analysis reveals regional customers’ product sales and profits. Analytical users can use it to gain valuable insights on business growth across geographies and the distribution of profits among customers. They can receive extensive data by using the right visualizations and data structure. The project aims to include regional cash inflows and the customers’ product-specific churn over time.

In the analysis overview page, you could use Combo Charts, Cards, Bar Charts, Tables, Line Charts; for the customer segmentation page, you could employ Column Charts, Bubble Charts, Point Maps, Tables, etc.

The project aims to provide a thorough overview of the Covid-19 pandemic’s essential parameters, the latest situation, and detailed country-level evaluations. You can create a dashboard that gives valuable information regarding cases (active, deceased, or recovered), mortality, and recovery rates by nation and timeframe. Also, the dashboard might even include a management summary of the most important KPIs and a thorough analysis of individual report pages.

As for the Power BI visualization features, you can use- Bar Charts, Point Maps, Line Charts, Column Charts for the overview page; Doughnut Charts for category-wise case analysis; and Decomposition Trees for country-wise case analysis. You might also use Heat Maps to enhance your project’s dashboard visualization.

The idea for the Airport Authority Data Analysis project is to provide a clear picture of all the significant airport data. The total number of flights (incoming and departing flights), the total number of flight delays (arrivals and departures), ground processing time, and passengers feedback section can all be included in the summary page of this project’s dashboard. In case of flight changes, emergencies, or delays, this type of analysis could assist airport management authorities in making timely data-driven choices.

The dataset includes multi-year airline data from 2009 to 2018 to provide more time-series insights. You can use Power BI visualization options like Cards, Bar Charts, Flow Maps, TreeMaps, and Tornado Charts for flight analysis. You might prefer to use Bar Charts, Column Charts, or Cards for the passenger feedback.
